What is Somatic EMDR?
Somatic EMDR is a specialized therapy designed to help you heal from traumatic experiences by addressing both your mind and your body. It integrates two powerful methods:
-
EMDR Therapy helps process and resolve distressing memories by engaging your brain's natural healing ability through bilateral stimulation, like eye movements or tapping.
-
Somatic Therapy focuses on the connection between your body and emotions, helping you notice and release the physical sensations, tension, or stuck energy that often accompany trauma.
Why is the Body Important in Trauma Healing?
When you experience trauma, it’s not just stored in your mind—it’s also stored in your body. You might feel this as tension, numbness, a racing heart, or even chronic pain. By paying attention to these body sensations, we can uncover how your body holds onto the trauma and gently release it, making space for healing and relief.
How Does Somatic EMDR Work?
In a Somatic EMDR session:
-
We explore your experience gently: I’ll guide you to notice thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations linked to the trauma.
-
Bilateral stimulation is used: This might include following my hand with your eyes, gentle tapping, or listening to rhythmic tones to help your brain process the memories.
-
We stay attuned to your body: Throughout the process, I’ll help you tune into how your body feels. If you notice tension, discomfort, or relief, we’ll work with those sensations to help release what’s stuck.
-
Integration and grounding: We’ll wrap up the session by helping your body and mind feel grounded and calm.
What Makes Somatic EMDR Unique?
Somatic EMDR is particularly effective because it:
-
Addresses the whole self: It recognizes that healing trauma is about more than just “thinking differently”—it’s about feeling safe in your body again.
-
Helps regulate your nervous system: This therapy calms your body’s fight, flight, or freeze responses, reducing anxiety and hypervigilance.
-
Provides lasting relief: By addressing trauma where it’s stored, clients often feel a deeper sense of freedom and resilience.
What Will It Feel Like?
It’s a collaborative, gentle process. You’re always in control, and we’ll move at a pace that feels safe for you. Some clients feel emotional or physical release during a session, while others notice gradual changes over time—like feeling lighter, calmer, or more at peace.
