What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?
IFS is a type of therapy that helps you understand and work with the different parts of yourself. Think of your mind like a family—each part has its own role, feelings, and way of reacting to the world. Sometimes these parts work well together, but other times they might argue, feel hurt, or act in ways that don’t serve you.
The goal of IFS is to create harmony within this “internal family” by helping you connect with your true self—the calm, wise, compassionate part of you that can guide and heal all the others.
How Does IFS Work?
-
Get to know your parts: We’ll explore the different parts of you, especially the protectors, to understand what they’re trying to do for you.
-
Build trust with your parts: Instead of fighting or ignoring them, we’ll approach them with curiosity and kindness.
-
Heal the wounds of your exiles: Once your protectors feel safe, we can gently work with the hurt parts they’ve been protecting.
-
Restore balance and harmony: Over time, your parts will feel less extreme, and your Self will take the lead, helping you feel more whole and peaceful.
Why Do People Use IFS?
IFS is helpful if you:
-
Feel “stuck” or conflicted about something.
-
Notice patterns, behaviors, or feelings you want to change but struggle to.
-
Experience strong inner critics or self-doubt.
-
Feel like different parts of you are at odds (e.g., one part wants to take a risk, but another feels terrified).
-
Want to heal from past trauma or difficult experiences.
What Will It Feel Like?
IFS is a gentle and empowering approach. You’re in control the whole time, and we’ll move at a pace that feels safe for you. Many people find it comforting to realize that all their parts—even the challenging ones—are trying to help in some way.
